It wasn’t as easy as expected, but Rafael Nadal defeated Nicolas Kiefer 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a second round match at Arthur Ashe Stadium that lasted past midnight Friday. Nadal had not dropped a set in four previous matches against the veteran from Germany, but this time he had to work nearly three hours to secure the victory.
